One of the nicest early works (pre 1995) still available for purchase, this mermaid art is one of the black and white sketches that belong to the transitional period between surrealism and fantasy. This is an original work of mermaid art. One of the ways to tell that this particular piece of original mermaid art is an early work (besides the date), is that there is only one pen & ink technique in play: crosshatching. Later works usually incorporate three (crosshatching, stippling & contourism). A certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist, is included with purchase.

TITLE: "Knockout punch" © Chris Eisenbraun 1993.

Alfonse Mucha is one of my favorite artists, he was master of graceful art deco/nouveau line art. As a very small child, I once saw a mirror with the woman's hair was all over the place (his trademark). I didn't realize until years later (when I rediscovered his work) how that image has impressed me. The hair thing, that has always been a huge part of my artwork too :)

There is no attempt to put an ordinary or fantasy artwork backdrop into this black and white sketch but this work comes before any conscious attempts at surrealism have been made (although there is already a movement that way -- notice the surreal proportions of the sea shells <g>). This loosening up and complete letting go of a traditional backdrop (of either style: fantasy or traditional) is what really starts to open the way to surreal art. Taken in context of the other artwork created at during this time, this piece of mermaid art is part of the actual transition into surrealism :)

Symbols are a human language that already exists. No one had to make it up. It's already there. Blog: I've been drawing mermaids forever. The little mermaid was one of my favorite stories growing up and I wish Disney had left it alone, I still can't believe what they did to it <ugh>.
